Πάντως, ΕΝΑ παραμένει το σημαντικό ζήτημα: να μπορούν να αξιοποιηθούν, ασφαλώς, τα διαθέσιμα όργανα και ιστοί και να μην απορρίπτονται στα σκουπίδια αυτά, όταν συνάνθρωποί μας τα έχουν απόλυτη και άμεση ανάγκη.________"In the United States, organ donors are screened for potential risk of disease using a series of criteria. The Public Health Service regulation states that men who have engaged in same-sex sexual contact in the past twelve months are considered to be at “increased risk” for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. Increased risk donations are not prohibited, but are considered on a case-by-case basis, as long as potential organ recipients are informed of the risk and give their consent. However, the Health and Human Services Department acknowledges that designating a donor as increased risk discourages people from accepting the organ donation".https://www.kerrang.com/the-news/late-cynic-drummer-sean-reinert-wasnt-allowed-to-donate-his-organs-because-he-was-gay/+"Despite Viability, ‘Increased-Risk’ Donor Organs a Tough Sell to Transplant Patients The opioid epidemic has created a tragic surge in donor organs. But despite their safety record, the organs that could save lives go unused".One in 5 deceased organ donors in the U.S. is identified as increased risk. For a study published in Transplantation, Kaul led an analysis of Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) data showing organs labeled as increased risk are 7 percent less likely to be used than organs without the label. Also troubling, utilization rates of PHS-IR organs varied dramatically by geography. Depending on the donation service area, transplantation of available adult kidneys from increased-risk donors ranged from 20 to 100 percent, the analysis found. All organs identified as increased risk were less likely to be used with the exception of livers, for which transplant rates were nearly identical.A possible explanation? Patients with liver failure may be too sick to say no.An available liver is offered to the sickest person on the waitlist in a nearby area. Those who turn it down may not survive until another offer, or they may get so close to dying that they are taken off the waitlist.By comparison, a patient needing a kidney may continue dialysis and wait for another organ.(…)https://labblog.uofmhealth.org/industry-dx/despite-viability-increased-risk-donor-organs-a-tough-sell-to-transplant-patients________Tom Snyder:Updated statement regarding organ donation. In the days since that post I’ve been in contact with an organ transplant surgeon from Johns Hopkins who helped write the HOPE act, which Obama signed into law in 2013. We had a lengthy discussion, he’s actually a fan of Seans and reached out directly to the CEO of the organ donation company I spoke to the night of and morning after Seans passing. From the time Sean had passed to the time he arrived at the hospital was too long for him, or any other person to have donated any organs regardless of sexual orientation or male to male contact. What it turns out they were actually trying to do, although it was never explained to me until a couple days ago. Was to screen him for a tissue donation. Tissue can be taken up to about 24 hours after a person has passed. Tissue includes things like: skin, heart valves, ligaments, bones, veins, corneas, etc.Different government entities control who can or cannot donate Organs, Tissue or Blood. Organs are regulated by the PHS (public health service) There is a large shortage of organs and the PHS has made the rules for organ donation much more lenient in the past years to include people from the LGBTQ+ community. The FDA (food and drug administration) regulates Tissue donation. Unlike organs, there is not a huge shortage of tissue so the rules are more strict and in my opinion, archaic and bigoted. As stated in my previous post, Sean did not have HIV or any other STD’s for that matter and the only reason he could not donate tissue was due to having male to male sexual contact in the last 12 months.I hope this clears things up for people and we can put the issue to bed.-Tom
