A New York City Ballet dancer has said a newspaper critic, who called her plump in a performance of The Nutcracker, does not need to apologise. Jenifer Ringer told US show Today that her body is part of her "art form" and therefore open to criticism.
Alastair Macaulay's controversial review in the New York Times said the dancer "looked as if she'd eaten one sugarplum too many". He also published a follow-up column to answer criticism of his comments several days later.
In response to one reader, who had called his review appalling, the critic wrote: "If you want to make your appearance irrelevant to criticism, do not choose ballet as a career. The body in ballet becomes a subject of the keenest observation and the most intense discussion. I am severe - but ballet, as dancers know, is more so."
Ringer, 37, who has suffered from eating disorders in the past, admitted she has a "more womanly" body than most ballerinas, but is not overweight.
The New York City Ballet principal dancer Wendy Whelan said the comments made about Ringer's weight were unfair: "Jenifer has always looked like that. I think she's absolutely gorgeous. She's one of my favourite dancers in the world. And when I watch her dance, my eye doesn't see anything wrong with it."

Ο Paul Heaton τραγουδιστής και δημιουργός των Housemartins και των Beautiful South γκρινιάζει (μάλλον δικαιολογημένα) για το πώς γίνονται σήμερα οι επιτυχίες:
With most bands of the 70s or 80s, you formed a band, you wrote some songs, you then got a gig and then you maybe made a record if you could afford it.
The very, very last thing which could have happened would be for you to maybe make a video or go on telly.
Now people want to go on telly first, then they want to make a record, then they suddenly want to write songs, then they want to form a band and then they want to be photographed with a guitar to make them look real.
That's exactly the opposite way to how we approached it in The Housemartins and how it was done in my era.
