Director's note
Τhe Callas floats into a billowing plissé gown, a human being who has already departed from this world.
She's a marionette.
Unnatural, spooky her calculated movements, like under a fit of catalepsy, and yet, in the sensitive twitchings of the fingers, in the swaying of the supple body showing a glimpse of human suffering.
"Se dolce suon" in the very first notes trembles an abysmal, knowing grief, without the voice becoming ever an effectal sob.
She then builds up into the cadenzas of madness, in wich she, impersonalized, has to complete with the flute.
She glides reeling through the scales with purest legato, crowning the scene of her collapse with a high E flat, wich is at the same time a brillant feat of singing and A SHATTERING SCREAM OF DEATH.
