I'm on a plane to my home town. I haven't been home in four months. The longest I haven't visited my parents was six months in 2013. I'm not happy nor sad. I've missed my friends and family. I used to get really excited for small things, like flights, when I was younger. I catch myself smiling at the lady across the corridor. She wears a colourful scarf and reminds me of my grandma and how much I miss her. We didn't speak a common language so we needed someone to translate back and forth. Though most of the times the love we had for each other was enough. She was my icon. Her name Zobeide. The strongest person I've known and the most stylish of her time. When my mom left Iran to live abroad my grandma told her its better to be a sex worker and have your own money than be a housewife and financially dependent to a man. I come from a family of strong women. I was taught how to be a feminist before I knew the term for it. When my mother started studying medicine in Thessaloniki she barely knew any Greek , so she would translate every word from Greek to English and then from English to Persian (she couldn't find a Greek-Persian dictionary in any bookstore). It took her a year of re-writting medical books every day to learn them fluently. I look out of my window and I see small islands I don't recognise. Some of them are uninhabited and I'm wondering if they even have names. Yesterday was fathers day but I didn't call mine and this morning I was feeling guilty about it, so I gave him a call. His first response was if I needed anything; I guess he isn't used in me randomly calling him just to say hi.
