London's Royal Academy of Arts is hosting the UK's first major retrospective of the German artist Anselm Kiefer, who has been hailed by critics as "the world's greatest living artist".Featuring sculpture, painting, photography and installation, the exhibition spans 40 years of his career and looks at themes of religion, poetry and philosophy against the backdrop of European history.Born in Germany in 1945, as the Nazi regime collapsed, Kiefer's often controversial work confronts the dark realities of Germany's past."Art is an attempt to get to the very centre of truth. It never can, but it can get quite close," he said in a recent interview. The artist - whose work has been shown around the world - has lived and worked in France since 1993. In 2007, he became the first living artist to install a permanent work in Paris's Louvre gallery since Georges Braque in the 1950s.For the exhibition at the Royal Academy, Kiefer has created a number of works specifically for the museum's main galleries, alongside artwork collated from international private and public collections which demonstrate his use of materials, including ash, clay, fabric and dried flowers. The exhibition runs from 27 September to 14 December.
