Το Hotel-Casino de la Selva. Εκεί συναντιούνται ανήμερα της Γιορτής των Νεκρών του 1939, στις πρώτες σελίδες του Κάτω από το Ηφαίστειο, του αριστουργήματος του Malcolm Lowry, δύο από τους κεντρικούς ήρωές του. Το Καζίνο κατεδαφίστηκε το 2001 για να ματατραπεί σε εμπορικό κέντρο. Δώθηκε μεγάλος αγώνας για να διατηρηθούν έστω οι τοιχογραφίεες φημισμένων μεξικανών ζωγράφων. Βλ. "Υπάρχει μια παράξενη αδελφότητα που την απαρτίζουν οι φίλοι του Κάτω από το Ηφαίστειο. Δεν γνωρίζουμε όλα τα μέλη της και οι ίδιοι δεν γνωρίζουν ο ένας τον άλλον. Αλλά μόλις κάποιος σε μία συνάντηση προφέρει το όνομα του Malcolm Lowry, ή αναφέρει το Κάτω από το ηφαίστειο, αμέσως συσπειρώνονται, απομωνόνονται και επιδίδονται στη λατρεία τους. Οικτίρουν τους μη μυημένους κι αν τύχει και πέσουν πάνω σε αντίπαλο ή σε σκεπτικιστή, τότε τον κατατροπώνουν.
Μερικοί, μετά από αυτές τις μονομαχίες, δεν ξαναμίλησαν ποτέ μεταξύ τους, άλλοι που συμπτωματικά βρέθηκαν μαζί, έγιναν φίλοι. Το όνομα του Malcolm Lowry που μερικοί το χρησιμοποιούν σαν κωδικό, είναι για κάποιους άλλους ένα τεστ που χωρίζει την ανθρωπότητα σε δύο στρατόπεδα. Να μιλήσω και για κείνους που πήγαν στο Μεξικό μόνο και μόνο για ν' ακολουθήσουν τα χνάρια του Προξένου στο Quauhnahuac ; Αλίμονο, το Quauhnahuac δεν είναι παρά μια μικρή πόλη για Αμερικανούς τουρίστες : η Cuernavaca και η σκιά του Προξένου, όπως κι αυτές του αυτοκράτορα Μαξιμιλιανού και της Σαρλότ εκδιώχθηκαν μέσα στα ερειπωμένα παλάτια από τα "φλας" των φωτογραφικών μηχανών. Η περίφανη κατοικία του Cortès αντηχεί πια μόνο από ένρινα "Hello". Η μαγεία που επεφύλαξε στους αναγνώστες του το Κάτω από το ηφαίστειο προέρχεται αποκλειστικά και μόνο από τον ίδιον τον Malcolm Lowry (...)".

Το Κάτω από το Ηφαίστειο είναι αφιερωμένο στην Margerie Bonner, τη δεύτερη γυναίκα του Malcolm Lowry, καθώς κσι στον φίλο του Philippe Thoby-Marcelin. Η ολοκλήρωση του βιβλίου δεν θα είχε επιτευχθεί χωρίς την Margerie Bonner, κι ας θεωρούν μερικοί φανατικοί αναγνώστες του συγγραφέα την επιμελειά της βέβηλη , επειδή επεδίωξε να τιθασεύσει με αρκετά "cuts" την "τροπική" του γραφή. Αν ο Luis Bunuel είχε κάνει το Κάτω από το Ηφαίστειο ταινία... Ο ίδιος είχε εκδηλώσει ενδιαφέρον για τη μεταφορά του βιβλίου, αλλά εγκατέλειψε την ιδέα πιστεύοντας πως θα το αδικούσε. Για το ιστολόγιο Malcolm Lowry @ The 19th Hole, "χάθηκε έτσι μία ευκαιρία επικών διαστάσεων". Η μεξικάνικη ταινία του "Ο Θάνατος σε τούτο τον κήπο"( 1956) δίνει μία ιδέα της φιλμικής αυτής απώλειας.

As for the xopilotes, the vultures, I should add that they are more than merely cartoon birds: they are real in these parts, in fact one is looking at me as I write, none too pleasantly either: they fly through the whole book and in X1 become the archetypal, Promethean fowl. Once considered by ornithologists the first birds all I can say is that they are more than likely to be the last.
