Γιατί γυναίκες στην Ινδία φωτογραφίζονται φορώντας μάσκα αγελάδας;

Γυναίκες από την Ινδία πρωταγωνιστούν σε μια σειρά φωτογραφιών, φορώντας μάσκες με κεφάλι αγελάδας, για να θέσουν το εξής ερώτημα: «Στην Ινδία είναι ασφαλέστερο τελικά να είσαι ιερή αγελάδα ή γυναίκα;». 

Ο ομαδικός βιασμός ακολουθούμενος και η δολοφονία μιας νεαρής μαθήτριας στο Δελχί, το 2012, είχαν πυροδοτήσει τότε μια εθνική συζήτηση σχετικά με την βία κατά των γυναικών. Όμως πάνω από 4 χρόνια αργότερα, τα στατιστικά δείχνουν πως οι καταγεγραμμένοι βιασμοί και κακοποιήσεις, δεν έχουν μειωθεί σημαντικά στην ινδική πρωτεύουσα, με τουλάχιστον 6 βιασμούς και 12 κακοποιήσεις να καταγράφονται επί καθημερινής βάσεως μέσα στο 2016.

The debate is never ending "Whether to consume or worship it" but gaining political benefits out of it is wrong. Why not let the people decide what they want to consume. I will be photographing women from different parts of the society. This is silent form of protest which starts from India Gate, one of the most visited sights in India. Αντιθέτως, το ποσοστό καταδίκης σχετικά με σεξουαλικά αδικήματα μειώθηκε, από περίπου 50% το έτος της προαναφερθείσας σεξουαλικής επίθεσης στο Δελχί, σε λιγότερο από το ένα τρίτο την περσινή χρονιά. 

Οργανώσεις γυναικών αποδίδουν τα κατ' εξακολούθηση υψηλά ποσοστά σε βαθιά εδραιωμένες πατριαρχικές συμπεριφορές, ακατάλληλα εκπαιδευμένη αστυνομία καθώς και έλλειψη κλειστού κυκλώματος καμερών σε αρκετά μέρη της πόλης.

Ωστόσο την ίδια περίοδο σημειώθηκε μια ραγδαία αύξηση της βίας κατά των θρησκευτικών μειονοτήτων στο όνομα της προστασίας των ιερών αγελάδων, ενός ζώου σεβαστού από πολλούς.

Οι δύο παραπάνω τάσεις αντιπαραθέτονται στο τελευταίο πρότζεκτ του Sujatro Ghosh, ενός καλλιτέχνη από την Καλκούτα. Ο Ghosh απαθανατίζει γυναίκες, που φορούν μάσκες αγελάδας στο κεφάλι, να ποζάρουν μπροστά από διάσημα μνημεία, μέσα σε τρένα ή ακόμα και στα ίδια τους τα σπίτια.

I asked the woman whom I photographed "How do you feel safe when you wear the mask?" Aanya said : "When I came across Sujatro's first post, I was intrigued. It is such a different concept and I fell inlove with it immediately. «Το βασικό ζήτημα είναι τα δικαιώματα και η προστασία των γυναικών» αναφέρει ο ίδιος. «Δεν είμαι ενάντια στην προστασία των αγελάδων, λατρεύω τα ζώα. Αλλά ανησυχώ για την κοινωνικο-πολιτική κατάσταση της χώρας μου»

Ο Ghosh δήλωσε πως το πρότζεκτ του επισημαίνει την αντίθεση των συμπεριφορών απέναντι σε γυναίκες και αγελάδες, ενώ παράλληλα δείχνει αλληλεγγύη στα θύματα της βίας των ανδρών αλλά και του όχλου.

Suchismita says: "As a woman, the question of harassment and insecurity has been a part and parcel of my life. And even more so, as I left my home and went to another city for my higher studies. But in the past few years, this question has been at the forefront in every single discourse. Rather than addressing it, there have been repeated examples of sidelining it with more trivial matters. In a country with astounding levels of rape, molestation, abuse and other manners of crimes perpetrated against women, it is beyond sick that the matter of cow protection and religion has more traction. What use are protected cows and religious sentiments if half the population of the country needs to live in constant threat in order to facilitate it? When I saw the rather innovative idea used to engage with the cow protectionist camp, I decided I had to be on board. These last few years, I've realised injecting humour is the only way to tackle these idiots. If we take offence at everything they say and do, then there lies no essential difference between them and us.
